  4.     ACCUSED. Carl Stokes, 61, former mayor of Cleveland; of
  5. stealing a 20-lb. bag of dog food; by a pet-store owner in
  6. Shaker Heights, Ohio. It was the second shoplifting incident
  7. involving Stokes, now a municipal judge. In December he
  8. acknowledged absentmindedly taking a $2.39 screwdriver from a
  9. Bedford, Ohio, store and putting it in his pocket. Stokes denied
  10. any wrongdoing and requested a jury trial. He will appear in
  11. court on June 26 to respond to the charge. Elected one of the
  12. nation's first black big-city mayors in 1967, Stokes has been
  13. the subject of rumors that he might run for the office again
  14. this year.
